In this blog I will be talking about two films which are The Woman In Black and in these two film I will be talking about the marketing and distribution of the film but also I will talk about the producing and audience targeting. First I will talk about the Marketing And Distribution of the two films.

Marketing

Film can be marketed in all different ways, most film have trailers for them, so that people can see what the film is about on the Internet but some other films also use posters, websites, synergy and production blogs which then people can discuss what they think the film may have in it and make more of a interest of the film. Sometimes the film has a huge interest and has BIG STARS therefore they may get a RED CARPET interview and premier.

The women in black was market by firstly having the trailer being released on the 10th of April 2011 to comic con therefore this film would be marketed to specific type of people who may of read the book of the women in black, also some of the trailer of the women in black was attached to the deathly hallows trailer for people who are fans of Daniel Radcliffe as he is Harry in the Harry Potter films.  This will bring more attention to the film as people watch film which one of there favorite actor is in. then they released trailer on CBS and MTV, this bring more attention towards the film as teenagers watch this channels and trailer on YouTube therefore more people were able to see the trailer. After this the official theatrical posters were released in 2012. Shortly after this happened the book of the woman in black was republished was a cover of Daniel Radcliffe on it. The film was marketed about a year before the actual film came out to create a hype and making sure that lots of people will go and watch the film, therefore they this give the audience anticipating when the film was going to be released, which means that more people would come to the film when it is first released, so on the opening box office day. Also it went up on FaceBook and Twitter, to create more publicity, and when new items come out of the women in black it automatically goes u on the websites. This create word of month therefore on Twitter and FaceBook people can reblog or repost items on the website and share what they have seen, which creates more of a hype for the film. They also had a premier which fans can go and meet there favorite actors that are in the film, this creates a lot of publicity for the film as well.

Distribution

How does it work?
When the film is completed and sent to the studio, the studio then makes a license agreement with the distribution company. then the company then decides how many copies will be made. The distribution company then shows the film to some prospective buyers from the theatres. the bugs then talk which film to lease and the terms of the lease agreement with the distribution company. the film is then sent to the theatre a few days before the opening day. The theatre shows the film for a certain amount of weeks. At the end of the engagement the theatre then sends back the films and the distribution company makes payments for the lease agreement.

Distributor Companies

Lionsgate Films: They did films like You're Next, Jessabelle 2014, Saw and The Cabin In The Woods.
Hammer Films: They did films like The Women In Black, Horror of Frankenstein, Let Me In
Icon Films: They did film like Paranormal Activity,  The Grudge 3
Universal Home Entertainment: They did film like Ouija 3 Werewolf: The Beast Among Us

Finding the right distributor for your film is very important because the more money the distributor has the more it can advertise the movie and give more of a public boost and make the film popular. So the more copies the distributor can give to the theatres around the world, therefore they can negotiate better lease deals.

Small distributors have less money, so they have to be picky about what film they produce and how to spend there more, and therefore normally have short films made, which are not really publicised on television. Being small you have full control over the films and the rights, but the disadvantage of being a small distribution is that its a full time job and time consuming. It may limit your option is sales for the film. Big distributors have more money than small companies and have big stars and producers making film therefore they get more money. Therefore there film are publicised on television and on the Internet.
If you choose the wrong distributor big or small, it means that that the film may have less publicity and less people may want to see it because they wouldn't have marketed your film right and put it on different social networking sites so that more people would find out about it. This means that the film would produce than money than you may have thought it would have, this mean you would have had a loss of profits, which isn't good for a film. therefore choosing the right distributor is very important to get the best possible amount of money and publicity for your film.

Distribution Of The Woman In Black

The film distributor for the Woman In Black is Cross Creek Pictures.
The woman in black was screened in 2,855 in the USA and 412 in UK in the opening weekend. in the box office the woman in black made $20,874,072  from USA and £3,153,020 from the UK.
The woman in black exceed it expectation as it had a gross of $54,333,290.  The distributor is a well know as it has produced film like Black Swan, Rush, Legend and A Walk Among The Tombstones and a new film called Everest.
The distributor Cross Creek Picture did a very good job, as a well known distributor it had link to certain sites and know a lot about publiscing this type of film and how to make the most impact in the social network sites and grapping people attention to the film, therefore the film made a lot of money from all the advertising the distributor did and how they publicied it year before the released make people what to watch it more and not loss interest in the passing months. As the film made a huge profit on the film and went over what they thought the film would have made, the distributor made a huge impact on the film because of everything that it did to promote the film.

Producing

 Role of a producer?
A producer has a wide range of different roles that they do. they have control over every aspect of a film production. They are often the first person involved in a project, also they come up with ideas for the production, they select the screenplay, secure the rights, choose screenwriter, and story editors. Also approve of location, studio hire, final shooting script, schedule, budget and and pick production team. The producer oversee all aspects of the production because the producer will have a creative vision  and he or she knows how they want the film to turn out, they will also know how much money they will spend on each part of the production and where everything should go.

Producer have to do lots of research for there film, some of the methods of what they do is test screening which is a preview screening of a movie before its release in order to get audience reaction. Then they have questionnaire for people to answer, so they know what people think about the film and if it will be popular. Another thing they may do is have focus group where they would talk about the film and tell each other how they feel about the film. These method help the producer to help understand if there film will become popular or not, it also help the producer to figure out, what the audience may change in the film, what was good and what can be improved.
When a producer gains all this information, the producer then uses it to help he figure out how many people may come and see the film, and what type of people will come and it as well. Also to see if they should make another film because it was popular, and what people said if it needed to be improved on.

There are lots of company who produce horror film but the major company who produce the more popular horror film are:

Audience Target

To find your audience target you need to first look at what type of people will come and to see your film, some of the factor you have to consider is the age of your audience, if you have a younger age than you can have certain thing in your film, and is that age right for your film. The gender of your audience, it is for girl and boys or just boys or just girls. Religion,, and if certain people believe in certain thing, and if you have religion in your film, for example the conjuring, the warren were religious therefore they put crosses around the room, to find the evil spirit in the house. Race, this can effect how people look at the film as certain race can have certain stereotypes. Sexuality, education, annual income, so if you are lower class, middle class, or higher class, this may effect what type of films you are interested in. Media habits will also determine what you like, and buying habits, and loyalty to the brand, so will you watch the series of certain film for example the purge. Also group of audience therefore will your film be for groups of friends, or couple, normally horror film are for groups of friends who go and watch the film together, or a first date, so they have a good conversation starter. another factor is the person personality and interest, so is the person into horror film and what type of horror film are they more interested in, gory ones or  paranormal ones. To interest a certain target audience you have to think about all the factor that we talk above, this will help you insure that you get the right audience for your film.

Action Steps
When you start thinking about who your audience is for you first think about?
Who is your primary target audience?
What makes your movie different from competing movies?
Why should your audience spend two hours watching your movie?

These are the steps that all producer and directors are thinking about when making a film.  If you have the wrong target audience, then the wrong kind of person will come and see your film, which means that you would get bad reviews. for example if a film was put as a 15 put exactly the film is more marketed towards a 12 year old then 15 may find the boring or not even come to see the film therefore you will have less sales. This is bad for your film, as then you film will get a bad review. The target audience for the women in black is 12A this means that it is not suitable for children under 12 and this is because of the number of scenes of supernatural horror and threat and the ghosts of her victims, appear to and threaten the central character and other characters.if the women in black was too the wrong audience than it wouldn't of had a big profit gross as it had and less people would have turn up to the premier of the movie and watch the film on the day that it was released. Which means it would have had been less popular than very popular as it was.
